RULES AND REGULATIONS

This event is sanctioned by and conducted under the rules and regulations of the National Dance Council of America, Inc. The NDCA Rule Book is available on line at www.ndca.org

ADDITIONAL RULES

  1. All competitors must purchase an admission ticket. Entry fees are additional.
  2. No entry may be accepted that does not include any required entry fee. Requests for refunds will only be honored up to the closing date.
  3. Registration with the National Dance Council of America (NDCA) will be required for all amateur competitors – Pre-Teen, Junior, Youth, and Adult (register on line at www.ndca.org).
  4. All competitors are required to check in with the competition registrar at least one hour in advance of their scheduled time to dance.
  5. All competitors are required to be in the on-deck area at least 30 minutes in advance of their scheduled time to dance.
  6. NDCA rule X.C.8. will always apply, which does not allow any competitor to dance in three consecutive skill levels in the same age category, specifically Novice, Pre-Championship, and Championship.
  7. The „School Syllabus” competitions are considered „student /student” events. Competitors dancing only in these events are not required to register with the NDCA.
  8. All Pre-Teen I, Pre-Teen II, and School Syllabus competitions are restricted to the syllabi listed in Appendix I of the NDCA rule book. American style events are limited to the bronze and silver American Style figures, elements and restrictions. International style events are limited to the bronze, silver, and gold International Style figures.
  9. „Newcomer” competitors remain eligible for this category until they have placed in a final of any event in their age classification, provided a semi-final was danced. Competitors who lose their eligibility will become eligible once again when they move up to the next age level.
  10. „Newcomer” competitors may not also enter any „open” events in any style.
  11. Competitors entered in „School Syllabus” events may not enter „open” events in the same style.
  12. Elementary School competitors may dance up into the Junior High School category. Junior High School competitors may dance up into the High School category.
  13. Pre-Teen, Junior, and Youth competitors may not compete in any „School Syllabus” event in the same style.
  14. Age classifications appear in the NDCA rule book.
  15. Competitors in the Latin-American divisions must not be overly suggestive in their movements at all times while on the floor. Couples who are viewed as inappropriate will be warned once, and then will be subject to disqualification.
  16. Any competitor who wears a costume deemed by the organizers to be unsuitable will be requested to change. If such request is not followed, the competitor will not be allowed to dance and their entry will be canceled. Specific costume rules are listed separately.

TELEVISION AND LOSS RELEASE: „In consideration of all goods and valuables, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, the undersigned hereby irrevocably give and grant to Utah DanceSport Challenge. the right to use, refer to and reproduce programs by means of video tape recordings or still photographs (Hereinafter referred to as „Reproductions”), edited and arranged as you desire, using my name, voice, likeness, acts, poses, appearances and utterances as part of and in connection with my appearance on any program, and in any advertising, publicity and promotion relation to your activities, the program and the products or serviced of any sponsor(s) thereof; and to exhibit, transmit, distribute, and otherwise use same as you desire in all fields and media throughout the world without limitations. We agree that Utah DanceSport Challenge, and any of their affiliates, subsidiaries and employees shall be free of any liability or claims arising from the production, exhibition, transmission, distribution or use of said programs. All reproductions shall be your sole and exclusive property. We hereby forever release and discharge you of any and all liabilities, claims and demands, suit and actions which we ever had, now have, or may have based upon any agreements herein made. We shall defend, indemnify and hold you harmless from and against any and all claims, demands, losses, suits and expenses relating to this agreement. We agree that we have not and shall not accept any money or other valuable consideration for the inclusion in the program of any matter promoting any product or service. This agreement is intended, among other things, to fulfill all requirements of the Civil Rights Law and of any and all other restrictions against violations of our so-called right of privacy. The terms „you and your” and words of similar import, as herein used shall include you and your officers, directors, licensees, lessees, assigns, successors, affiliates, associates, subsidiaries and parents, and all other users of the reproductions, and their employees. We warrant that we are over eighteen (18) years of age, or are the parents of pre-teen, junior or youth competitors, and have full right, power and authority to make this agreement. We understand that in permitting us to appear on the program, you are acting in reliance upon this agreement.” „No responsibility for loss or theft of articles left in Changing Rooms, Ballrooms or Hotel Rooms can be accepted by the Organizers, and neither can they be held liable for injury sustained by persons attending this event. Everyone attending does so at his or her own risk.” „All persons attending this event, whether as spectators, competitors, officials, or guests of the organizer, shall be bound by the printed rules, and by participating in this event automatically become obligated to adhere to them.”

ADULT AMATEUR, YOUTH, JUNIOR II, JUNIOR I

Below are the costume specifications for all amateur costumed events. No entry will be considered fully accepted without final costume approval. All Adult Amateur, Youth, Junior II, and Junior I costumes should be approved by Natalie Schulz. Please email questions or photos to info@utahdancesport.com.

MEN

  1. Costumes appropriate to the style.
  2. Latin shirts for Adult Amateur, Under 21, and Youth competitors may be open to a point eight inches down from the Supra Sternal Notch (Jugular Notch).
  3. Latin shirts for Junior I and Junior II competitors may be open down to the sternum.
  4. Sheer fabric may only be worn on the arm. No sleeveless shirts.

WOMEN

  1. Regular cut dance trunks and fishnet hose must be worn (Fishnet hose will not be required for the Ballroom style).
  2. Straps over both shoulders of at least one inch in width are required. If multiple straps go over a shoulder at least one strap must be the required one inch width from front to back. Halter tops or designs that resemble them are not permitted unless they also have the required one inch straps.
  3. Lower backs must be covered with a solid fabric from a point five inches above the waistline.
  4. Sheer fabric may be used on the arms and the bodice in the front from the bust-line up and in the back from a point five inches above the waistline. Straps are not required when colored sheer fabric is used over the shoulders.
  5. Skirts may be broken or slitted from the trunk line down, but must cover the legs to mid-thigh when not in motion.
  6. Skin from the front to a point several inches behind the sides (axilla-line) must be covered.
  7. Cutouts, sheer and skin-tone fabric will not be allowed if deemed by the organizers to be inappropriate.
  8. Unitards are not allowed.

PRE-TEEN I & PRE – TEEN II

Pre-Teens must dress as listed below.

BOYS

  • Trousers
    • Black or dark blue color only
    • High waist optional
    • Satin stripes are allowed
  • Shirts
    • Plain white or black long sleeved collared shirt only (no wing collars)
    • No pleats or ribbing
    • Sleeves to be worn at wrist length
  • Sweaters and vests are not allowed
  • Tie – Black color only, may be either straight or bow
  • Socks – Black or dark blue color only
  • Shoes- Heel height not to exceed 1.5 inches (must be black)
  • Materials – Fabrics must be plain (i.e.: cotton, polyester, cotton/polyester blend, wool blend)
  • No satin or shiny fabrics
  • Decorations, rhinestones, glitter, metallic thread, patterns or sequins are NOT allowed
  • Makeup – Not allowed
  • Hairstyle – Long hair must be worn in a pony tail

 

GIRLS

  • Skirt with top or simple dress with attached under garment or leotard top with full skirt
  • Skirts
    • Plain or pleated with minimum 1 to maximum 3 half circles.
    • One plain simple underskirt allowed which is no larger or longer than top layer, and is the same or similar color as the outer skirt
    • No uneven hemlines, frills, splits, openings, lace, or sequins.
    • Length of skirt must not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee cap and no longer than 3 inches below the knee cap
  • Bodice
    • Necklines: Boat, high neck, v-neck, sweetheart, ‚peter pan’ collar and regular collar are allowed. Edging or trim of any kind, including ribbon, satin, lace, sequins, etc. is not allowed on the neckline
    • Belting, as well as gathering or shirring is permissible from the waist down for a maximum of two inches, provided it is part of the dress itself and not an accessory
    • Edging or trim on the bodice is not allowed
  • Sleeves
    • Long, short, elbow length, cap, puff or sleeveless styles are allowed
    • Cannot be replaced by trimmings, frills, or edging on the shoulder line
    • No „finger loops” allowed
  • Materials
    • Fabrics must be only one color throughout
    • No glitter, metallic thread, or similar materials
    • No use of feathers, fringes, bows, belts, frills or sequins
    • No flesh color fabric
    • Any use of color coordinated ‚see through’ fabric must be lined from waist to shoulder; for use on arms no lining is needed
    • Lace (or similar fabric) is not allowed. Lycra, spandex, polyester, velvet, satin or jersey is encouraged
  • Shoes and Socks
    • Shoes – Heel height not to exceed 1.5 inches, and must be block heel style if a dance shoe. If the shoe comes with rhinestones on the buckle then they are allowed.  If the shoe comes with glitter on the shoe then it is allowed.
    • Socks: White ankle socks (may have a small amount of lace), flesh colored pantyhose, or light pink or white tights must be worn.
    • No Fishnet Tights
  • Accessories, jewelry, and makeup
    • No use of arm bands, chokers or headbands
    • No decoration is allowed on dress or in hair
    • No jewelry is allowed, other than one small earring in each ear
    • No makeup allowed
    • Use of fake eyelashes, fake fingernails, colored or glitter hair spray is not allowed

SCHOOL SYLLABUS EVENTS

School Syllabus events must dress as listed below.

BOYS

  • Trousers
    • Must be black
    • High waist optional
    • Satin stripes are allowed
  • Shirts
    • Plain white or black long sleeved collared shirt only (no wing collars)
    • No pleats or ribbing
    • Sleeves to be worn at wrist length
  • Sweaters and vests are not allowed

  • Materials – Fabrics must be plain (i.e.: cotton, polyester, cotton/polyester blend, wool blend)

  • Decorations, rhinestones, glitter, metallic thread, patterns or sequins are NOT allowed
  • Makeup – Not allowed
  • Hairstyle – Long hair must be worn in a pony tail

 

GIRLS

  • A black skirt and a white top must be worn
  • Skirts
    • Plain or pleated with minimum 1 to maximum 3 half circles.
    • One plain simple underskirt allowed which is no larger or longer than top layer, and is the same or similar color as the outer skirt
    • No uneven hemlines, frills, splits, openings, lace, or sequins
    • Length of skirt must be at least knee length
  • Bodice
    • Necklines: Boat, high neck, V-neck, sweetheart, ‚peter pan’ collar and regular collar are allowed. Edging or trim of any kind, including ribbon, satin, lace, sequins, etc. is not allowed on the neckline
    • Gathering or shirring on the bodice is not allowed
    • Edging or trim on the bodice is not allowed
  • Sleeves
    • Long, short, elbow length, cap, puff or sleeveless styles are allowed
    • Cannot be replaced by trimmings, frills, or edging on the shoulder line
    • No „finger loops” allowed

 

  • Materials
    • No glitter, metallic thread, or fabric creating pattern effects
    • No use of feathers, fringes, bows, belts, frills or sequins
    • No flesh color fabric
    • Any use of color coordinated ‚see through’ fabric must be lined from waist to shoulder; for use on arms no lining is needed
    • Lace (or similar fabric) is not allowed. Lycra, spandex, polyester, velvet, satin or jersey is encouraged

 

  • Shoes and Socks
    • Elementary School girls must wear shoes with heels that are no higher than 1.5 inches, including if they dance up a level.  Junior High School and High School girls are not restricted by any heel height
    • White ankle socks (may have a small amount of lace), flesh colored pantyhose, or fishnet tights

 

  • Accessories, jewelry, and makeup
    • No use of arm bands, chokers or headbands
    • No decoration is allowed on dress or in hair
    • No jewelry is allowed, other than one small earring in each ear (no dangling earrings allowed)
    • Basic makeup is allowed for Elementary School girls.  Competition makeup is allowed for Junior High School and High School girls
